CHOICE Review

In this work, Ostrander tries to fill the need for a comprehensive book on choral arranging encompassing various styles. It is geared to the developing professional arranger, the church or community choir director, and the school vocal teacher. Emphasis is placed on arranging techniques for the standard choir groupings (two-part elementary, three- and four-part middle school, SATB), and the scope of musical styles discussed is eclectic-traditional, sacred, popular, jazz, country, and rock. With the current popularity of vocal jazz and show choirs, the chapters on arrangement incorporating small instrumental ensembles are especially useful and informative. The concepts discussed are clearly illustrated with musical examples, and many chapters conclude with study exercises. On the minus side, the book contains no references or bibliography. This is a handy guide for the beginning choral arranger with a basic knowledge of music theory and harmony. Recommended for upper-divison undergraduate students.-J.M. Kelly, Hiram College
