Great Britain's Ministry of Town and Country Planning was established in 1943 when it took over the planning functions of the Ministry of Works and Planning. Its name was changed in January 1951 to the Ministry of Local Government and Planning. In November 1951 it became the Ministry of Housing and Local Government. In 1970, the Ministry of Housing and Local Government merged with the Ministry of Public Building and Works and the Ministry of Transport to form the Department of the Environment.
