String ensembles (Topical Term)

Here are entered compositions not in a specific form or of a specific type for ten or more different solo bowed stringed instruments and collections of compositions in several forms or types for various numbers or combinations of solo bowed stringed instruments. Compositions for ten or more of the same bowed stringed instrument and collections for various numbers of the same bowed stringed instrument are entered under Viol ensembles, Violoncello ensembles, and similar headings.

When used for an accompanying ensemble in headings with medium of performance, the term "string ensemble" stands for two or more bowed stringed instruments.
