In Feb. 1958 Egypt and Syria united to form the United Arab Republic, of which Egypt and Syria were the component provinces. Syria withdrew from the union on Sept. 28, 1961. Egypt retained the name United Arab Republic as its own official designation until Sept. 2, 1971, when this name was changed to Arab Republic of Egypt. Works by Egypt before the union in 1958, by the province of Egypt during the existence of the union, and by the Arab Republic of Egypt after the change of name in 1971, are all found under Egypt. Similarly all works by Syria (including those by the provincial government during the existence of the union) are found under Syria. Works by the United Arab Republic are found under United Arab Republic. SUBJECT ENTRY: Works about these jurisdictions regardless of period covered are normally entered under Egypt and/or Syria. However works limited in subject coverage to the historical, political or cultural aspects of the United Arab Republic (the jurisdiction formed by the merger of Egypt and Syria) for the 1958-1961 period only are entered under United Arab Republic.
