The East Africa Protectorate was proclaimed on Nov. 19, 1890. After July 23, 1920, it was known as Kenya Colony and Protectorate. A constitution conferring internal self-government went into force on June 1, 1963, and Kenya became fully independent on Dec. 12, 1963
